Shravanagudda
The 900-year-old monolithic statue of Gomateshwara (Bhagawan Bahubali) is erected atop a 50 meter tall hillock called Shravana Gudda, which looks like a chariot. The statue of Gomateshwara at Gommatagiri is an early Vijayanagara creation in granite, by one Kengal Raja and is assignable to the 14th century A.D. The hillock has about 80 steps carved into the rock and the gate at the top opens into a small courtyard. The 16 foot image of Bahubali stands majestically in the centre open to the sky. It has serene facial expressions and curly hairs. The statue is 18 feet in height made of black stone. The calm and smiling face of the statue is very attractive. This place has been enshined by the Chengalavas and Kongalvas during 11th century. Both the shoulders and legs of the statue are covered by branches of leaf called Madhavi and thick curly hair on the head of the statue have snakes around it. The standing snakes with their hoods on either side of the statue are very attractive and unique of the Gommata sculptors seen in India. A row of the foot prints of the 24 tirthankaras are seen carved and installed near by the hill. The model of Samavasarana can be found in the place. To the northern side is a foot. Another tiny temple the Jalamandir has a neat little image of Mahaveer Vardhaman. On the southern side is a rocky pedestal with footprints of Neminatha reached by a staircase. The idol of Bhagawan Bahubali was discovered by Late Sri C.B.M.Chandriah when he was on his way to some other place. The statue has a Mastakabhisheka every year.
